BRUSSELS, MOSCOW - NATO and Russia said yesterday they had made progress in their latest round of talks on clearing the way for the alliance's planned expansion into former communist Europe, but said differences remained.

In a joint statement issued after talks in Brussels between the NATO Secretary General, Mr Javier Solana, and the Russian Foreign Minister, Mr Yevgeny Primakov, the two sides said they had agreed to meet again soon in Moscow.

President Yeltsin meanwhile emerged for the first time from recuperation, following his bout of double pneumonia last month, to say that Russia remained firmly opposed to enlargement but hoped for a compromise when he meets President Clinton for a summit in Helsinki in a month's time.
