The jury in the Central Criminal Court trial of a man accused of murdering another associated with the INLA in 1999 was discharged yesterday after the prosecution decided not to proceed with the case against him.

Mr Daniel Finnegan (20), of Rutland Avenue, Crumlin, Dublin, had denied that on or about October 10th, 1999, he murdered Mr Patrick Campbell (22), of Corduff Park, Blanchardstown, Dublin. Mr Finnegan had also denied a second charge that on or about the same date he was engaged in violent disorder.

The State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, had confirmed that knife wounds to the legs of the deceased significantly contributed to the cause of death.

It was found that Mr Finnegan could not have caused those injuries, and the prosecution decided not to proceed with the case.

Mr Finnegan also changed his plea on the charge of violent disorder. The court will deal with that on October 8th, when a probation report will have been prepared.
