Motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads today as icy conditions throughout the country have made driving hazardous.

Drivers are being warned to slow down and to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front as numerous collisions were reported as a result of icy weather.

Conditions were particularly bad in the midlands, north east and north west of the country.

Roads in Kildare were described by gardaí as "treacherous", while extra care was being advised for drivers on the N14 Letterkenny to Lifford road and around Raphoe. Driving conditions in Cavan were also poor today.

AA Roadwatch said road temperatures were above zero, but some roads may not yet have been treated.
