Mother charged with killing son remanded for two weeks

A Co Cork mother charged with killing her son aged eight has been remanded in custody for another two weeks.

Diane Ward (42), Harrison Place, Charleville, Co Cork, is charged with the murder of her son Anthony at their home on September 3rd last.

She appeared via video-link at Limerick District Court yesterday from the Dóchas Centre at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

She was due to appear before Newcastle West District Court on September 11th last, but when the case was called, Garda Insp Paul Reidy said Ms Ward was “medically unfit to travel” and presented a letter from the Health Service Executive.

Ms Ward spoke only briefly yesterday via video-link to confirm her name and that she could see and hear the court proceedings.

Garda Sgt Donal Cronin said the case had been adjourned to yesterday for service of a book of evidence, which he said was not yet ready.

Garda Sgt Cronin said he was seeking to have Ms Ward remanded on consent for a further two weeks.

Solicitor Paul Cagney said he had no objection to the application.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly remanded Ms Ward in custody until October 9th when she is due to appear before Limerick District Court again via video-link.
