An error at the mortuary of St James’s Hospital prevented an autopsy being carried out on the body of a man whose death may be related to asbestos, an inquest heard yesterday.

Dublin Coroner’s Court heard that the body of Owen Winters (72), from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, was released by mortuary attendants despite an autopsy being ordered.

Coroner Dr Brian Farrell said the absence of an autopsy meant he had to rely on the clinical reports only.
