A mortar barrage into central Baghdad this morning killed at least one Iraqi and wounded 11.

An explosion outside the main commercial office of mobile phone firm Iraqna killed one Iraqi civilian and wounded at least nine.

Police at the scene said a mortar had exploded outside the office. Witnesses had initially said a car bomb had detonated.

In a street near the Tigris river, another mortar round destroyed a civilian car and wounded at least two people.

Some of the mortars landed inside the Green Zone, the fortified compound on the west bank of the Tigris that houses the US and British embassies and the interim Iraqi government.

A rocket attack on the Green Zone last month killed four Nepalese employees of a British security company.
