A new survey by the Department of Health into residential care for the elderly shows that 80 per cent are now over 75 years of age compared with 60 per cent in 1980.

The Department says likely factors responsible for this trend include increased life expectancy and better health in old age. Almost 70 per cent of all residents are female, according to the survey.
