Monaghan United today signalled their intent to clamber out of the relegation zone by signing a new goalkeeper and putting two of their established players on the transfer list.

Following their 8-0 whopping at the hands of Galway United last week, manager Bobby Browne decided it was time to make significant changes at Monaghan and today completed the signing of Shelbourne reserve goalkeeper Gareth Downey.

"We've been leaking too many goals recently" said Browne, "Gareth will help us shore things up. I also hope to be making a couple more signings next week."

To fund the new signings, Browne today placed Eddie Meier and Ken Lundy on the transfer list.

"We could need them at the weekend," said Browne, "but as of next week I'll start listening to offers."

Downey, meanwhile, will have to start proving his worth immediately, since this weekend's visitors to Century Homes Park are none other than table-toppers Shamrock Rovers and Monaghan will again be without the injured quartet of Paul Shiels, John Carroll, Mick Scully, and Derek Gill.
