Japanese car maker Mitsubishi faces a fresh wave of recalls in Japan, the Japanese transport ministry said today.

Mitsubishi plans to recall 401,106 vehicles, the ministry said, including 110,000 cars that had already been recalled once last summer after a scandal involving the cover-up of defects and customer complaints.

The news was a further setback for the automaker - now struggling to restore its image and its financial health with the help of DaimlerChrysler, which owns 34 per cent of the firm.

Mitsubishi Motors' shares fell 8.3 percent on Thursday to close at 364 yen, a new low for the month. The benchmark Nikkei average ended the day up 0.33 percent at 13,327.39.
