MISSPELT ROAD signs in Irish are to become a thing of the past in one Gaeltacht county following an initiative by a retired broadcaster.
Mayo County Council has agreed to correct a rash of incorrectly spelt Irish place names on road signs by September following representations by Seán O Healaí, a former journalist with Raidió na Gaeltachta. O Healaí, who lives in Castlebar, had outlined 33 place names across the county which were incorrectly spelt and noted that the Gaeltacht status of three areas could be at risk as a result.
Following a meeting between council officials and O Healaí, which was also attended by Irish language commissioner Seán Ó Cuirreáin, all remaining incorrectly spelt signs on the county’s regional roads are to be replaced.
