Eight Macedonian soldiers were killed and six wounded when land mines exploded north of the capital Skopje, a Macedonian army spokesman said.

He said it was an apparent attack by ethnic Albanian guerrillas.

"Eight dead. They ran over mines. They were in a truck on the road between Ljubanci and Ljuboten," the spokesman said. "Six others were hurt".

People living nearby said they heard shooting from the area.

The deaths came just as Macedonian families in the southern town of Prilep, 160km south-west of Skopje, prepared to bury 10 soldiers killed on Wednesday in the bloodiest incident so far in the six-month ethnic Albanian insurgency.

All of the soldiers were from Prilep, and three of them were Romany

The news was a fresh blow to hopes a newly agreed peace deal could be signed on Monday.
