Two men, members of the travelling community, appeared before Galway District Court yesterday in connection with a knife assault on Irish Olympic boxer Francie Barrett, in Galway last weekend.

Mr Edward McDonagh (30), of Bay 7, Tuam Road halting site, Glenanail, Galway, and Mr Michael McDonagh (27), of Derrynane, Clybawn Road, Salthill, Galway, were both charged with assaulting Mr Barrett at Glenanail on August 14th. They were also charged with producing a knife with intent to cause injury.

Mr McDonagh was further charged with assaulting Mr Frank Barrett on the same date.

Insp John Courtney said the matter had been subjected to quite a lot of media attention and he asked for an adjournment so gardai could fully investigate all aspects of the case. Defending solicitor Mr Tom Broderick consented to the adjournment.

Judge John O'Neill remanded both men on continuing bail to appear before Galway District Court on September 21st.
