Winter Olympics:  Ireland's Kirsten McGarry finished 32nd in the women's Giant Slalom at the Winter Olympics in Turin today.

The 20-year-old Dubliner, who has been skiing competitively since the age of nine and competes full time on the European Cup circuit, was 42nd after the first run having completed in a time of 1 minutes 08.19 seconds.

She improved on that time in the more challenging second run, finishing 32nd of 43 finishers in 1 minute 14.68 seconds.

Julia Mancuso stormed down the slopes to hand the United States women their first gold medal in Alpine skiing at the Games.

The victory bucked a trend that had seen American skiers fall short of their aim to be "Best in the World", though Ted Ligety won gold in the men's combined last week.

Mancuso (21) held on to her lead from the first leg.

"I didn't know when I woke up this morning that I would go to sleep as Olympic champion," a delighted Mancuso said.

The American finished just under a second ahead of Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen and Anna Ottosson on Sweden in third.
