The former Mid-Ulster MP, the Rev William McCrea, claimed he injured his shoulder, back and ankle when a chair was pulled from under him at a council meeting four years ago.

The DUP MLA is suing the chief executive of the nationalist-controlled Magherafelt District Council, Mr John McLaughlin, for injuries arising out of the incident in the council chamber on November 14th, 1995.

Judge Norman Lockie was told at Magherafelt County Court yesterday that Mr McCrea refused to leave the chamber after being ordered by the Sinn Fein chairman, Mr John Hurl, to address his remarks "through the chair".

Mr McCrea's counsel, Mr Alan Kane, claimed the chair on which Mr McCrea was sitting was "pulled sharply or firmly" from beneath him, causing him to go down on his knees and over on his ankle.
