The Rev Willie McCrea of the DUP topped the poll in the Mid-Ulster constituency following a close race with local MP Mr Martin McGuinness of Sinn Féin.

The DUP candidate was the first elected with 83 votes more than Mr McGuinness.

There was an increase in Sinn Féin's vote from the last Assembly election of just under 5 per cent against a 4 per cent decrease for the SDLP. The DUP's vote dropped marginally by just over 1 per cent while the Ulster Unionist Party vote dropped by just 1 one per cent.

Mr McCrea said he would push for a thorough renegotiation of the Belfast Agreement. "I feel very happy about topping the poll and I am thankful that the people of Mid-Ulster have given me the opportunity to take a stance against the Belfast Agreement and to stand along with my colleagues in demanding its renegotiation."

He added: "The unionist people of Mid-Ulster have clearly given their answer to Sinn Féin's bragging and boasting that they would win three seats there. That now clearly will not happen."

Mr McGuinness said he believed his party's overall political advances would enable Sinn Féin to contest the posts of either First Minister or Deputy First Minister in any future Executive.

"But we must also focus on the unionist vote because it is critical that as many pro-Good Friday agreement candidates are elected." Mr McGuinness added that he believed more than 70 of the 108 MLAs would be pro-agreement.
