The widow of Det Garda Jerry McCabe, Mrs Anne McCabe has said that she hopes the McCartney family will get justice quicker than she did.

Mrs McCabe accompanied the five McCartney sisters and partner, Ms Bridgeen Hagans, when they went to the White House yesterday.

The Limerick woman, whose husband was slain in Adare, Co Limerick, in 1996 earlier attended a breakfast in the John Jay College in honour of his memory.

Saying that she supported the family "100 per cent", Mrs McCabe said she believed both she and they had suffered the effects of IRA intimidation.

She said she believed the gardaí were forced to prosecute her husband's killers for manslaughter, rather than murder because witnesses were intimidated.

"I bitterly regret that that happened. I would say to the McCartneys, 'Be as strong as possible and go anywhere'."
