The Olympic gold medallist, Mary Peters, is to be given the freedom of her hometown of Lisburn, Co Antrim. The honour will be conferred on Ms Peters by Lisburn Borough Council at a ceremony at Hillsborough Castle on Saturday.

She will arrive at the castle in a horse-drawn carriage, accompanied by her brother John who, with his wife, has travelled from Australia to attend.

The award is being made in recognition of the former athlete's achievements and her service to the community over the past 25 years. Ms Peters won a gold medal in the pentathlon at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972.
