Markets round-up: Banks make strong start to week

The ISEQ index posted a gain of 109 points today with bank and technology shares making a positive start to the week.

Bank of Ireland gained 29 cents to euro 10.89 while AIB gained 10 cents to euro12.40. CRH announced another US acquisition today. The acquisitive building products company has bought Mount Hope Rock Products, a New Jersey quarry operator.

Elan also made solid gains after announcing today it had signed a research agreement with anti-allergy specialists with Allergy Therapeutics. Elan shares rose 30 cents to euro50.91.

Technology stocks also took their direction froma strong opening on the Nasdaq today. Iona Technologies gained euro4.36 while Parthus jumped euro1.31 to euro15.01.

Shares in London also closed on a firm footing led by gains in new economy shares.

Telecom shares were in demand with BT shares were up 8p at 558p while Cable & Wireless gained 15p to £5.13.
