Every year, for as long as it lasts, the winner of the annual Dublin City Marathon is to be presented with a sterling silver trophy in honour of the late Noel Carroll, the middle-distance runner who was the voice of Dublin Corporation for more than 25 years, writes Frank McDonald.

The Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Dr McDaid, has invited silversmiths to enter a design competition aimed at finding a trophy that would be a fitting commemoration of Noel Carroll's contribution to sport and the city.

"Noel was one of Ireland's finest middle distance runners," Dr McDaid said of the former chief executive of Dublin Chamber of Commerce, who died suddenly last October.

The State Assay Master, Mr Ronald Le Bas is circulating details of the design competition to all qualified silversmiths in Ireland. All entries must be in sterling silver and conform to Irish hallmarking standards. The winner will receive a prize of £1,000 and a further £9,000 will be available to manufacture the chosen design.
