At Castlebar Circuit Court, sitting in Westport, Judge Carroll Moran said he was bound to forgo imposing a prison sentence on Vincent O'Hora so compensation could be paid to the man he assaulted.

O'Hora agreed to pay £100 a week for 20 years to Mr Damian Garrett, who suffered the permanent loss of his sight in one eye.

O'Hora (26), Lord Edward Street, Ballina, admitted assaulting Mr Garrett (23), Mullamore Road, Crossmolina, Co Mayo, by hitting him in his eye with a glass.

The judge passed a 10-year sentence, suspended for 20 years, on condition that £100 a week was paid over that time.
