A 36-year-old Dublin man is expected to appear before Dublin District Court today charged with manslaughter and arson in connection with the death last month of Sgt Andrew Callanan (36) at Tallaght Garda station. The man was released yesterday from St James's Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for burns sustained in the fire in which Sgt Callanan died.

Just before 5 a.m. on Thursday, July 21st, a man entered Tallaght Garda station armed with petrol and flares and started a fire. He himself caught fire and Sgt Callanan suffered serious burns extinguishing the flames.

Sgt Callanan was treated at Tallaght General Hospital, but died of his injuries shortly after being admitted. From Thurles, he was married with three young children.
