A 37-year-old man is in a "serious but stable" condition in hospital after being shot in Enniskillen in Co Fermanagh last night.

The man was approached by two men as he was getting into his van and shot in the side, an RUC spokesman said.

The attack happened at around 10.30 p.m. in Kilmacormick Avenue in the town.

An RUC spokesman condemned the shooting, which he described as a "brutal and callous attack" in a busy street full of children and other pedestrians.

"It is amazing that such a reckless act did not result in death or serious injuries," he said.

The incident is not believed to be sectarian, he said.

Another man is recovering in hospital from injuries to his head, back, arms and chest after being attacked in a Lisburn Co Antrim street this morning.

An RUC spokesman said the man was surrounded by a group of youths as he was getting into his car at the junction between Stewartstown Road and Twinbrook Road.

The spokesman said it appears to have been an attempted carjacking and have ruled out a sectarian motive.

The man, though injured, managed to drive off and raise the alarm.
