A 34-year-old father of five has appeared at Clones District Court on burglary and theft charges, including stealing €64 from the home of an 86-year-old widow at Latlurgan on Sunday night and in the early hours of Monday morning.

Simon McGinley,Latlurgan Court, Monaghan, was remanded to Cloverhill prison where Judge Patrick Clyne ordered that he be held in an isolation unit for his own safety, as he is facing more serious charges.

Outside the court Mr McGinley's wife and mother claimed that he has been victimised by the press.

Inspector Pat McMorrow objected to a bail application from Mr McGinley's solicitor on a number of grounds which Judge Clyne ordered that should not be reported.

Mr McGinley will appear at the internal Court in Cloverhill prison on June 25th, when the more serious charges are expected to be proffered.
