A FATHER-of-two was killed in a collision in Co Limerick yesterday, just 200 metres from the site of a crash last month, which claimed the life of a baby boy.

Originally from west Clare, John Hinchy, (34), of Father Russell Road, Raheen, Limerick, died after the van he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with an articulated truck.

The crash took place at Knockaunavodig, near Rockhill Cross on the N20 Limerick to Cork Road at about 6.30am.

The victim was pronounced dead at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

He is survived by his wife and two children, including his six-month-old baby.

The driver of the lorry, who was travelling in the direction of Limerick, was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

It is understood that Mr Hinchy, who was an electrician, was travelling to work in Cork at the time of the collision.

Gardaí are investigating how the crash occurred and detectives have spoken to a number of people who witnessed the collision.

The section of the N20 was closed for a period to allow for a technical examination of the scene and a clean-up of the area as the lorry had shed its load of wood in the collision.

The fatal collision occurred just a short distance from the scene of last month’s tragic incident in which a baby boy died.

Thirteen-month-old Thomas Anthony O’Brien from Charleville, Co Cork, died on February 4th last when the car he was travelling in was involved in a head-on collision, with a van travelling in the opposite direction towards Limerick.

A six-year-old girl who was also travelling in the same car suffered serious head injuries in the crash.

Witnesses to yesterday’s fatal collision are asked to contact gardaí in Bruff on 061-382103 or any Garda station.
