Man held over Portrush fire death

Police in Co Antrim have arrested a man over the death of another man whose body was found in a burned out flat in Portrush.

Police in Co Antrim have arrested a man over the death of another man whose body was found in a burned out flat in Portrush.

The PSNI is treating the death of the man (35) as murder.

His body was discovered by fire crews who were called to the blaze at Causeway Street, Portrush.

Police are trying to trace witnesses who may have seen a motor scooter being abandoned nearby, close to the town's East Strand.

Meanwhile police are investigating a suspicious fire at a Co Tyrone centre for people with learning disabilities.

Two buildings at Erne House, in the grounds of Omagh's hospital, were damaged.

The blaze was brought under control by midnight last night.

SDLP councillor Dr Josephine Deehan condemned those responsible.

"It is very distressing news to hear that the centre has been seriously damaged in this fire which is thought to have been started maliciously," she said. "It is difficult to understand the mentality of someone who would want to destroy such a valuable community resource."

Police have cordoned off the area and an investigation is under way.
