A 33-year-old man was tonight arrested by detectives investigating a series of loyalist murders in north Belfast.

The suspect is being questioned as part of Operation Ballast - a PSNI inquiry into killings carried out by a UVF gang in the Mount Vernon estate.

The investigation, which is being conducted by the Historical Enquiries Team, was established following former Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan’s report into claims of collusion between RUC officers and the UVF gang.

The man is being questioned at the PSNI’s Serious Crime Suite in Antrim.
