A man was shot dead today in a gangland-style killing which police believe could be linked to the drugs trade.

The victim was targeted at a house in Hazelbrook Avenue, Bangor, Co Down, shortly after midday. Another man was taken to hospital with wounds which are not life-threatening.

A man was arrested in Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, by officers investigating the killing.

Chief Supt Nigel Grimshaw said: "I will not speculate on a motive for this murder. It is crime-related, not terrorist-related, and I would appeal to anyone with information to contact detectives."

Police said no members of the security forces were involved. One possible motive is drugs.

Hazelbrook Avenue is a mainly residential area of two-storey terraced houses close to Castle Park.

Chief Supt Grimshaw added: "Any shooting anywhere, for any reason, is totally shocking and the community of Bangor is horrified by this awful act."

The man was arrested in Ormeau Avenue. Eyewitnesses said several police cars surrounded a vehicle and the man was immediately put into a forensic boiler suit.

Alliance Party MLA Stephen Farry said: "It is appalling that someone has lost their life in this incident, and the family and friends of the man that died are in my thoughts at this time of tragedy.

"This was an absolutely despicable incident. People in the area are stunned at this news."

DUP MLA Alex Easton said: "This is an appalling incident and I would utterly condemn this shooting. This is not what we want to see in our society, and would call on anyone with any information to come forward to the PSNI."
