A man (53) is due to appear before Trim District Court today in connection with a suspected cross-Border diesel-smuggling operation.

The man who is due to face charges relating to the Taxes Consolidation Act was arrested yesterday after raids on houses and business premises in Louth and Armagh.

The raids, which involved gardaí as well as PSNI and British Army personnel, was the culmination of a two-month investigation, code-named "Operation Nursery", into smuggling, racketeering and money-laundering in counties Louth and Armagh.

A Garda spokesman said two cars, three trucks and a "substantial sum of money" were seized. It is understood the vehicles were part of a major diesel-laundering plant along the Border.
