A 31-year-old man has died after the motorbike he was driving was involved in a crash with another motorbike in Co Cavan last night.

The crash happened shortly before 8.30pm on the road between Ballinagh and Cavan town at Creighan.

The man was taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The second motorcyclist, a man in his late 20s, is recovering in hospital.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and in particular to anyone travelling between Ballinagh and Cavan town between 8pm and 8.30pm yesterday evening to contact them.

The scene of the crash remains closed pending a full technical examination and diversions are in place.

Two other people also lost their lives on the roads over the weekend. A 30-year-old died on Friday night when the car in which he was travelling crashed on the Ennis to Tulla Road in Co Clare. And an 82-year-old woman died yesterday morning when the car she was driving crashed outside Boyle Co Roscommon.
