A DUBLIN man killed another man by plunging a knife into his chest in a row over £10, the Central Criminal Court was told yesterday.

After he was stabbed, Michael Waters ran a few hundred yards along the road and then collapsed and died, Mr Patrick Gageby SC, prosecuting, said.

Mr Mark Scally (21), of Glenties Drive, Finglas, Dublin, has denied murdering Mr Waters (27), also of Glenties Drive, in Dublin on September 26th last year.

In court yesterday, Mr Gageby said the death of Mr Waters happened over something very trivial. A few weeks before the stabbing, Mr Scally had asked Mr Waters to sell a bike for him and Mr Waters did so. Mr Waters got £30 for the bike, paid Mr Scally £20 and kept £10 for himself.

However, a problem arose about Mr Scally having the bike in the first place and Mr Waters had to get the bike back and refund the money paid. He did so and then Mr Scally was to pay him £20.

Mr Gageby said Mr Scally paid back £10 and Mr Waters had been pressing him for the rest.

Sometime after 10 p.m. on the night of September 26th 1995, Mr Waters came out of the Cardiff Inn pub, in Finglas and took a bag containing a T shirt and jeans from Mr Scally, counsel said. Mr Waters had said he would hold the bag until he received his money.

Some punches were traded and then Mr Waters went back in to the bar with the bag. Then some minutes later there was a fight outside between the two men. Counsel said the jury would be satisfied Mr Scally had a knife and had plunged it into the side of Mr Waters's chest. Mr Waters ran up the road, collapsed and died.

The trial continues today before Mr Justice Flood and the jury.
