A Cork man has been remanded in custody for sentence after he was yesterday convicted of raping a then 13-year-old girl in the toilet of a flat five years ago.

Mr Justice Paul Carney ordered the preparation of a victim impact report after the jury returned its guilty verdicts at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork. He remanded the accused (25) in custody for sentence in Dublin on February 25th.

The accused, who was 21 at the time, had denied a charge of having sexual intercourse with the girl without her consent and a second charge of raping the girl between May 1st and May 31st, 2008.

The victim, now aged 18, wept and put her head in her hands after the jury of six men and five women emerged after five hours and 17 minutes of deliberations over two days to find the accused guilty of both charges.

The girl had told the court how she had been drinking with a group of others on the day in question and had consumed half a flagon of cider and five bottles of Budweiser when she went to the toilet in the flat and noticed that there was no lock on the door.

He had come in and raped and assaulted her.
