Insp Martin Byrne applied to have Mr Eadon remanded in custody to appear at Harristown District Court, Castlerea, on March 18th for the preparation of the book of evidence.

Aidan Crowley, solicitor for Mr Eadon, asked Judge Devins that his client be given immediate psychiatric attention once he was brought to Castlerea.

Asked by the judge if there was any reason for this, Mr. Crowley replied he had known the accused for a number of months and there had been a progressive mental deterioration in him, and that he was in need of immediate medical attention.

Insp Byrne said that shortly after the accused had been arrested, a local GP, Dr Patten, had been brought to Castlebar Garda station to see him. He had then been brought to Mayo General Hospital, where he had been assessed by a doctor in casualty.

On the application of Mr Crowley, legal aid was granted to the accused.
