A Portadown man appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the attempted murder of a man in Portadown last Saturday evening.

Mr Robert Andrew Coulter (33) was also charged with having a loaded assault rifle and magazine, together with a revolver and five rounds of ammunition with intent to endanger life.

Mr Coulter, a printer from Armagh Road, Portadown, was arrested by the RUC after he was detained by members of the public after he entered Craig well Avenue close to the town's nationalist Obins Street area.

The court was told that Mr Coulter had attempted to murder a man, named on the charge sheet as Mr George McCoo. A police officer told the court that when both charges were put to Mr Coulter at Lurgan RUC station on August 2nd, he replied "not guilty".
