Man (36) dies in Co Westmeath road crash

Gardai in Granard Co. Longford are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a 36-year old man today.

Gardai in Granard Co. Longford are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a 36-year old man today.

The incident happened shortly after mid-day on the R363 at Slanemore, Ballynacargy in Co. Westmeath when the jeep the man was driving hit a post in front of a house. No other vehicle was involved.

The man taken to the Midlands RegionalHospital at Mullingar where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The road is closed and diversions are in place. Garda Road Traffic Collision Investigators are at scene.

Earlier today, a woman (24) died after the car in which she was travelling in crashed in Co Laois.

The vehicle in which the woman was a passenger collided with the side of a building at approx 2.50am at Rossleaghan, Portlaoise.

The 26 year old male driver of the car was taken to Portlaoise General Hospital with serious injuries.

The road remains closed pending examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.
