A man is recovering in hospital in Belfast after he was shot in the left leg in a paramilitary-style attack.

The 20-year-old was injured in Poleglass, west Belfast, this morning.

At around 1am the victim was walking at Ardcaoin Drive when approached by two  men who shot him.

SDLP Cllr Matthew McDermott condemned the shooting.

"There is no place in our society for armed groups or armed criminals, whether they be trying to impose community control or pursue their own vendettas," he said.

"We have put all that behind us and that is where we want to keep it. Those who try to challenge our right to a peaceful, lawful society must meet the full rigour of the law as well as rejection by the whole community."

PSNI appealed for anybody with information to contact them.
