A man (19) has been arrested in Co Down in connection with a hit-and-run on a firefighter who was working to free the bodies of crash victims earlier this week.

The firefighter was working at the scene of Monday's crash outside Newry that killed five people, when he was hit by a car.

Three fire crews from Newry were called to the accident on a road between Drumalane Road and the junction with Forkhill Road.

Police had set up checkpoints on both ends of the road, but a driver in a red Audi, who was signalled to stop, failed to do so and struck the firefighter, carrying him on the bonnet of his car for almost 30 yards.

The car was later found abandoned a short distance away.

The firefighter was treated in hospital for injuries to his leg.
