Gardaí in Drogheda will this morning resume a search of wasteland as they try to locate the knife used to fatally stab a local man.

The 41-year-old victim was named locally as Des Kimmins, originally from the Ballsgrove area of Drogheda.

He died in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda early yesterday after being stabbed following a row with another man in the Rathmullen estate at 3.30am.

A 19-year-old who was arrested at the scene remained in Garda custody last night.

Initial indications were that the younger man was in a house in the estate when the deceased came by after 3am.

An altercation arose on the street outside and the stabbing took place.

Emergency medical technicians who attended the scene tried to save the man's life but he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Gardaí immediately launched a murder investigation.

Mr Kimmins was a father of two young children and it's believed they may have been the reason why he called to the house in question.

Their mother was out at the time and a teenager and a male companion were babysitting the children.

Many local people witnessed the incident and were interviewed by gardaí yesterday.

A knife was recovered during searches yesterday; it appeared to be a kitchen knife.

However, it is believed that the murder weapon may not be the knife recovered and may have been thrown onto nearby waste ground.

A post-mortem examination will take place this morning and is expected to confirm the cause of death.

Meanwhile, more arrests are expected in a separate murder investigation by gardaí in Drogheda.

To date people ranging in age from 15 to 23 years have been arrested and released without charge in relation to the death of 29-year-old Darren McKeown.

A native of Donore in Co Meath, he died after attending a party in the Rowan Heights estate in Drogheda in the early hours of St Stephen's day.

He was viciously assaulted and suffered numerous kicks to his head as he lay on the ground outside a house.

The motive for the attack remains unclear and gardaí say a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
