The 18-year-old man who died when the car he was driving crashed into a pole and overturned outside Cork city overnight, has been named as Timothy Walsh of Ashleigh Gardens, Skehard Road, Blackrock, Co Cork.

There were no other vehicles involved when the car crashed at West Village, Ballincollig at 4 am. The young man’s body was removed to Cork University Hospital for postmortem.

Early yesterday a 14-year-old boy was killed when the stolen car in which he was travelling went out of control and crashed into a tree in Cork city.

Officers were yesterday trying to establish whether the boy was a front seat passenger or the driver of the white Honda Civic when it smashed through a railing and collided with the tree on the Monaghan Road at about 12.20am.

It is understood he died at the scene; a 17-year-old youth was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Meanwhile, Gardaí have also named the man who died following a crash between his motorcycle and a van in Finglas yesterday evening.

The accident occured on the North Road, Finglas, at 6.30pm.

He was named as Brian Bennett of Huntsgrove, Ashbourne, Co Meath.So far this year 185 people have been killed on the State's roads, an increase of three on the same period last year. Six people have died over the last seven days.
