On the North-South Ministerial Council, the SDLP will work constructively to achieve the maximum harmonisation of social and economic provision throughout Ireland.

The party will play a full part in the British-Irish Council, promoting "the harmonious and mutually beneficial development of the totality of relationships among the people of these islands."

Social and economic development "will be central to SDLP activity in the new institutions".

The party will work for fiscal powers for the Assembly, the amalgamation of industry agencies, and strategic development of North/South tourism.

The party will work for the protection of farm incomes under proposed EU reforms of the CAP. It will also launch a vigorous marketing campaign for beef.

The party promises to work to end the 11-plus selection of children, and the schools' "league tables", abolish student loans and introduce "a proper grants system".

The party will keep the North's Housing Executive "as a single comprehensive housing authority." All public housing will be allocated "through a single waiting list and single selection scheme".

The party wants an "effective and fully resourced Equality Commission to deal with complaints based on gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status and dependants."
