The Democratic Unionist Party has suffered a setback in its first formal attempt to secure representation in the House of Lords.

The Irish Times understands that three DUP nominees were overlooked by the Appointments Commission in its consideration of proposals for a total of 46 new working peers announced by 10 Downing Street yesterday.

It is believed the three nominated were Mrs Eileen Paisley (wife of party leader the Rev Ian Paisley), party president Mr Jim McClure, and the former Mid Ulster and South Antrim MP, the Rev William McCrea.

Dr Paisley has been advised that his party's claim will be considered in preparation for the next list of working peers.
