A key witness in the poisoning death of former Russian security agent Alexander Litvinenko could give testimony to British investigators today, his lawyer said.

Andrei Lugovoi, a Litvinenko associate, met him in a London hotel on the day Mr Litvinenko believed he was poisoned. Mr Lugovoi had been due to testify since Tuesday after a team of Scotland Yard officers arrived in Moscow. However, the interrogation was postponed several times.

Mr Lugovoi is undergoing medical checks in a Moscow clinic.

A Russian news agency yesterday reported that another associate of Mr Litvinenko and a witness in the case, businessman Dmitry Kovtun, had slipped into a coma after being questioned by Russian investigators and Scotland Yard detectives.

Mr Lugovoi's lawyer denied that report again today, however, saying Mr Kovtun's condition was "the same" as before and during the interrogation.

Mr Litvinenko died in London on November 23rd after being poisoned with a rare radioactive substance, polonium 210.
