Tottenham wing back Christian Ziege has undergone an operation on a muscle in his left thigh and could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.

Ziege suffered the injury in Thursday's 2-2 draw with Charlton.

The German, who was sent off late in the game, was forced to call a doctor at home after extreme pain built up in his thigh.

At hospital, Ziege was told the blood build-up was so great that his leg would have to be cut open to relieve the pressure.

He then suffered complications with the stitching of the wound, which has not yet been completed.

"According to English specialists I will have to remain in hospital until next Tuesday and could be out of action for up to 12 weeks," he said on his website.

Ziege's dismissal against Charlton was his second in four days.
