PISA - A British soil expert has saved the 12th century monument in this Italian town from crashing to the ground by advising that large amounts of lead should be placed around its base.

"We are euphoric," said Mr John Burland, Professor of Soil Mechanics at Imperial College, London. "The tower has stopped its tilt. This is the greatest success in seven centuries.
