Tony Blair's impending departure from No 10 has seen Labour's poll rating climb to its highest for eight months, according to a survey.

The YouGovpoll for the Sunday Timesput Labour on 34 per cent, three points up on last month and four points behind the Conservatives, who are one point down on 38 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats are also down one on 15 per cent.

However the poll contained a sting in the tail for Gordon Brown, showing support for Labour slipping back down to 32 per cent if he is leader, ten points behind the Tories who rise to 42 per cent.

The poll found that by 50 per cent to 31 per cent people said that they did not like the Chancellor and by 35 per cent to 32 per cent that he would not be a good representative of Britain abroad.

In contrast, they thought by 49 per cent to 46 per cent that overall Mr Blair had been a good Prime Minister.

YouGov questioned 1,962 electors online, across Britain between May 10 to 11.
