Memphis - A jury found yesterday that the 1968 assassination of US civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King was the result of a conspiracy, and not the act of a lone gunman.

Jurors in Shelby County Circuit Court in Tennessee delivered the verdict after deliberating for three hours in a wrongful death civil lawsuit filed by the King family against Lloyd Jowers, a former cafe owner who has claimed to have been paid to arrange the murder.

James Earl Ray confessed to being the sole killer, but later retracted that admission. Ray died in prison last year.
