A Kilkenny teenager has been found guilty of murder of a woman in the city in 2002.

Mark Costigan, 18, of Aylesbury in Kilkenny was found guilty of the murder of Christine Quinn at her home on Greenfields Road in the city on December 5th, 2002.

Costigan inflicted a total of 69 knife wounds on the 36-year-old mother of two at her home in December 2002.

The court heard that the victim's teenage son found her badly beaten and partially burnt body.

The prosecution case said Costigan went from his school to the Quinn house, murdered Mrs Quinn, and went on to a video store to purchase a video game.

The court was told that the accused had his right hand bandaged the day after the alleged murder, telling gardaí he hurt it using a "jigsaw" in construction studies class.

Det Sgt Maher said he told the accused that his teachers had "no record" of him cutting his hand on a saw.

Costigan was convicted by a unanimous verdict by the six male and six female jurors following two-and-a-half hours of deliberations.
