A Kerryman charged with using a stolen car claimed he was a member of Sinn Fein and of the IRA and threatened to kill the garda who arrested him, a court heard yesterday.

Mr Thomas Moore (21), from Parkmore, Currow, Castleisland, threatened Garda Stephen O'Leary after he arrested him in connection with motoring offences in Cork.

"He became very abusive and he threatened to kill me," Garda O'Leary said.

He also threatened to kill a garda sergeant near his home in Co Kerry, Garda O'Leary told Judge Jim O'Connor at yesterday's bail hearing at Cork District Court.

Mr Moore is charged with using a stolen car, driving without insurance, using false registration plates and driving without a licence at Glen Avenue in Cork on July 28th, 1999.

Mr Moore's twin sister Sheila told yesterday's hearing that her brother was going for counselling at the National Rehabilitation Board in Tralee.

Ms Moore is getting married tomorrow and the family hoped the defendant would be able to attend, the court was told, but Judge O'Connor refused bail and remanded Mr Moore in continuing custody to appear in court on August 9th.
