A Kenyan mob beat to death six young men accused of robbing a house over the weekend before setting their bodies on fire, police said today.

The killings took place in Nakuru town, 140 km (87 miles) northwest of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, after a man arrested for robbery on Sunday identified nine accomplices.

The crowd killed six suspects, while three others escaped.

"The mob killed them first before burning them with petrol," Nakuru deputy police boss Patrick Wafula said.

Vigilante "mob justice" is common in Kenya, where many lack faith in the police who they say are corrupt and too ill-equipped to administer justice.

Mr Wafula said there were no suspects for the killings.

"It was a mob. You can't identify anybody, because no one is going to come up and say I was the one who killed them," he said.

"We can't arrest everybody in that town."
