The presenter will bring his career with the long-running chat show to a close with a host of celebrity guests.

Tonight's show will feature guests such as movie and US TV star Gabriel Byrne, along with comedian Pat Shortt, manager Louis Walsh and singer Imelda May. U2 are also set to make an appearance.

Speaking on RTÉ News tonight, the broadcaster said it was a sad time, and was like breaking up a big family. However, he hinted at his new project.

"I'm turning the page - finishing one chapter and starting a new one," he said.

The Late Late Showhas pulled in an average of 682,000 viewers for the current season.

Ryan Tubridy will take over as host of the show after the summer break.
