A large number of objections and submissions have been made to three related planning applications in Kenmare, Co Kerry, on an area known as the peninsula.

Planning is being sought for some 300 houses, along with town houses and apartments, retail units and car parks on 55 acres of ground between the Kenmare River and Kenmare town.

Over 100 submissions and objections have been received by Kerry County Council following a public meeting in the town hosted by the Kenmare Chamber of Commerce earlier this month.

In two submissions the Department of the Environment said removal of badgers and bats will have to be done under licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

A bat survey is currently underway on the land and there are also archaeological monuments, including a stone circle which will have to be preserved.

Currently, as well as the proposed units, there are up to 1,000 housing units under construction or about to begin construction in and around the town.
